Advices IDEAS AND ADVICE FOR HEALTHY SNACKS The consumption of a snack should be avoided half an hour before the meal. (We can prepare a healthy appetizer instead). We do not allow our child to eat snacks randomly during the day, in other words, we avoid “nibbling”. We teach our child to have fixed snacks during the day (school snack, afternoon snack, before bed snack) Snacks are not allowed one hour after a meal. We should not confuse hunger with boredom and we should find ways to make our child forget the food. Snacks and beverages are not allowed after our child has brushed its teeth. The snack should be in a small quantity, so that the child will not lose its appetite for the next meal. We discuss with our child the healthy and appropriate snack choices thus educating it for its future life. It’s good to have handy some healthy snacks, such as whole wheat cereals, cereal bars, fruits, yogurts. We place a basket with healthy snacks on the table or in the cupboard (in a place which is visible to the child). For the food that needs to be frozen, place it in a self and put a sign “healthy food”. We do not offer beverages with sugar as a snack, because they fill the child up without offering any essential nutrients. We do not get carried away to buy big quantities of “diet products”. It has not been proven to be beneficial to either adults or children and most of the time they consume more quantities and calories believing that they are more healthy. The secret to make our child eat snacks is to present it in an easy, quick and enjoyable way. If a hungry child comes home from school and we suggest an apple, probably it will refuse to eat it. But if the apple is cut into small pieces in a yogurt, then the child will eat it happily without complaining. Fruits and vegetables are always the better choices for snack.
